In this article, the intriguing and somewhat disturbing family dynamic in the Morel's household is outlined. The article focuses on Mrs. Morel's morbid relationship with her son, Paul. Their semi-incestuous bond fascinates yet disgusts the reader as Mrs. Morel lives her life trough Paul. Her stronghold on his life influences every decision and action that he makes. She uses Paul as a character in the virtual reality she never got to experience. Her failed marriage to Walter is now replaced by her son who has taken up the position of husband and provider unbeknownst to Paul.

This article is a psychological analysis of the intimate, nearly bordering sexual relationship between Mrs. Morel and Paul. The Oedipus Complex according tot he article is,"all male children form an erotic attachment to their mother and are jealous of the relationship the father has with the mother. The male child fears he will be castrated by the father so he represses the sexual desire for the mother and waits for his own sexual experience. However, if the boy does not fulfill these steps, then he will carry the oedipal complex with him into adulthood (Dobie 52-53). As a result, having this complex makes it very difficult to form adult relationships with others. In other words, if the child never grows out of this type of behavior, he will be dysfunctional in adulthood." One can see this practically incestuous relationship between developing when Paul saw his mother being abused by his father causing him to hate his father and become attached and protective of his mother. In the reverse, Mrs. Morel, the more she was abused by her husband, needed emotional and masculine stability which she found in Paul. Before Paul however, Mrs. Morel found solace in William before her he died. His death only propelled her need for Paul. She lives her life through her son, even neglecting her only daughter. Her quest to feel young and accomplish the things that wanted to do were stifled by her toxic marriage to Walter Morel but her desires were rekindled through the domineering love she had for Paul.
